Lulu's Restaurant Restaurant Review:

Legend has it that original-cum-former co-owner Steve Jurina, a Millie's Diner alum, wanted a girl's name for his own restaurant. Did he have a crush on a neighbor named Lulu growing up? Maybe. Maybe not. But one certainty is that the "eat generation" is sweet on this Shockoe Bottom spot, still owned by Paul Keevil (also of Millie’s fame), within watermelon seed-spitting distance of the farmers market. It's got that distressed look --- booths open on both ends, and exposed everything. The visible kitchen is where young cooks prepare weekend brunch and meals for the private events that folks can book here. Brunch feels like a special event unto itself, and draws in crowds with dishes from fried chicken and red velvet waffles and “Shockoe Bottom Florentine” (omelet with surryano ham, spinach, pimento cheese, poached eggs and hollandaise on English muffin) to specials such as steak and eggs or a seasonal seared mid-Atlantic rockfish with spring spinach, house potato cake and balsamic reduction drizzle. Beverages get a twist, as in the Brazilian mimosa with Kraken rum, pineapple juice and Champagne. The endearing, spot-on staff takes pride in this place and rightly so.
