Meridians Restaurant Review:

What began as a small import market stocked with specialty foods has morphed into a locals’ favorite restaurant for casual, healthy dining. Buried in one of Ventura’s dime-a-dozen strip malls, Meridians---with its chalkboard menu and counter-order service---offers a wide-ranging menu of California style fare, most of which leans on Italian cooking. Traditional pastas such as rigatoni get the Golden State treatment with chicken, sun-dried tomatoes, broccoli and a savory cream sauce. Pizzas range from the simple (pepperoni, vegetarian, Hawaiian style) to more adventurous concoctions like la pampa: a four-cheese pie topped with ham and hearts of palm with aïoli. Vegetarians have plenty of options, from pastas to sandwiches like the caprese, made with fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil pesto. While chicken is the ubiquitous meat of the Meridians' menu, carnivores should consider the steak and avocado sandwich, a tower of thin-sliced grilled New York steak, melted Swiss and sautéed mushrooms. Though limited, a small selection of wines by the glass or bottle adds to the dining experience.
