Mikuni was one of the first places in the Sacramento area to put a modern twist on traditional Japanese cuisine, and it's still going strong. The setting is contemporary, with blaring TVs and bright artwork. Although classic plates are available, the focus is on creative, highly-stylized dishes, many made with unusual ingredients and doused with inventive sauces. The truffle sashimi features thin-sliced fish topped with truffle wasabi sauce, while the black and white highlights seared albacore tuna with black caviar, jalapeños and sesame seeds. Dozens of specialty rolls are available, such as the train wreck, with chopped eel, seared tuna and spicy avocado, and the thirty-nine, with chicken teriyaki and cream cheese. Other options include salads, bento boxes, donburi and plenty of party platters.
