Mio Sushi Restaurant Review:

The Mio Sushi empire started in this charming converted Victorian home in the Northwest 23rd neighborhood. By negotiating directly with fishermen and distributors (the chain even owns a fish store), the restaurant can offer ultra-fresh, sustainably harvested (for the most part) quality sushi at moderate price points. The expansive menu offers intriguing alternatives for anyone weary of the same old rolls and sashimi, and daily specials abound. We like the spider rolls made with soft shell crab, Mt. Fuji rolls with crab and spicy salmon, and spicy tuna. Order the Caterpillar (unagi, cucumber, avocado, sweet sauce) or the Oregon roll with crab and asparagus, plus salmon and avocado on the outside. Non-sushi selections include the poke salad with Hawaiian tuna. For a change of pace, sample the innovative sushi pizza made with seaweed and topped with fish, crab or shrimp, a special sauce, sesame seeds and green onions. Tempura ice cream is a special for dessert. Beer and wine are available. While the interior room can feel cramped, the atmosphere is friendly, service is fast and children are welcome. In keeping with the times, gluten-free soy sauce is available upon request.
