Nightingale 9 Restaurant Review:

If the southern United States and Vietnam were somehow blended together, the food might taste something like what chef Robert Newton is doing at this Carroll Gardens restaurant. Newton, who also runs the kitchen at nearby Southern restaurant Seersucker, does an admirable job of interpreting Vietnamese cuisine. And while Newton’s focus isn’t an explicit “fusion” of Southern and Vietnamese, the chef just can’t help himself. Cha ca la vong, a fish sauce-drenched noodle dish popularized at one specific restaurant in Hanoi, here comes with fried catfish. Collard greens arrive with shaved coconut atop. Chicken pho, usually less flavorful than its beef brethren, is packed with tasty goodness. There’s a small, affordable wine list that includes a very drinkable house wine on tap. Note: This restaurant was formerly located at 345 Smith St.
