Oak Grill Restaurant Review:

The Dayton name is a powerful one in Minnesota. The family's department store, at 7th and Nicollet, also was the birthplace of the Target discount chain. But now the Dayton's name has been replaced by Macy's and, with it, many of its longstanding traditions. One beloved element of the store that remains unchanged is the Oak Grill. The clubby, oak-paneled room has been feeding generations of Twin Cities shoppers since its debut in 1947. Customers come for its affordable, well-prepared fare: pot roast with mashed potatoes, a chicken potpie, a hearty wild rice soup, meatloaf, an Asian chicken salad, towering sandwiches and a wicked chocolate ice box pie. Many regulars come just for the popovers, big and puffy and steaming hot from the oven. Lunch attracts a wide-ranging downtown crowd, from business executives to young families on shopping excursions; dinner attracts a small but loyal pre-theater crowd. Service is warm and accommodating, and the grill's snug bar continues to be a well-hidden retreat for shoppers seeking a little peace and quiet.
