If there is a recipe for restaurant success, Matthew Karp and wife Wendy Weinstein are following it. Owner-chef and marketing director, respectively, of Plates in Larchmont, the duo personify the culinary power couple in Westchester. Part business savvy, part nostalgia, the plates de nome are the forty from around the globe that adorn various parts of the restaurant --- some from as far away as Russia, others from their children's play kitchens. An American menu with the occasional diversion into the funky is highlighted by fresh staples: fish and meat. Appetizers include shareable starters ranging from simple Blue Point Connecticut oysters on the half shell to a delicate Asian-inspired tuna tartare with Hass avocado and taro root chips. The entrée of grilled bronzino with eggplant caviar, black olives, capers, cherry tomatoes and cippolini onions is light and full of subtle textures, while the PLATES buttermilk fried chicken with candied bacon Brussels sprouts, Grandma Jacobson’s gravy and sweet potato purée is as distinctly American as it gets. Desserts dabble further in the avant-garde with the giant Ring Ding, and two homemade cinnamon donuts accented by vanilla gelato. The wine list features artisanal and world-recognized labels that stand up to the menu. A bottomless barbecue brunch on Sundays underscores the restaurant's comfort food expertise and reveals its alternate casual side.
