We don't know how Porky the Pig would feel about Porkyland, which surely was named in his honor. But we like the place, as do many denizens of tony La Jolla, as well as other San Diegans who drive considerable distances to get their fill. This tiny spot specializes in carnitas, the classic Mexican dish of pork cubes simmered gently and at length in bubbling lard, until they acquire a crusty exterior and an almost velvety texture. Rice, beans and tortillas all are quite convincing, as are such other specialties as tamales, carne asada and tacos al pastor, or rolled tortillas stuffed with a specially seasoned, slowly roasted meat mixture that shares some characteristics with Greek gyros. For breakfast, design your own burrito or try the chilaquiles plate. It's a great takeout venue for families or parties, since it offers large family combo meals with pounds of meat, dozens of tortillas, and pints of rice and beans. Go for the churros for dessert.
