Saigon Shack Restaurant Review:

Located in the wood-clad space that housed Café Esperanto, Saigon Shack’s interior maintains the handsome pressed-tin ceiling and thick teak bar. The owners have also preserved the coffee culture, offering the usual caffeinated drinks, plus Vietnamese drip coffee. But the real reason to come here is for above-average banh mi sandwiches, which come in classic, spicy beef brisket (which really just tastes like a very good roast beef sandwich), first-rate Peking duck, and chicken. The secret weapons here are the baguettes, which are crunchy on the outside but soft inside. And while Saigon Shack scores points on the sandwich front it loses them on the other Vietnamese staples: variations on the theme of pho and b’un (vermicelli bowls with meat and veggies) suffer from the use of inferior ingredients. Service, achingly inattentive at times, doesn’t make up for it.
