THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Skool Restaurant Review:

Yes, the menus are printed on familiar lined and margined paper. And yes, they arrive affixed to a sturdy clipboard with the requisite pencil attached. But there will be no note taking at Skool. This Design District hideaway (with a coveted outdoor patio) is filled with young, fashionable folk who have a taste for sophisticated cocktails and fish-focused cuisine with Japanese and other Asian inflections. The ara-dashi soup, a savory seafood broth with mussels, grilled negi and baguette smeared with garlic seaweed butter, is a hearty start. We also recommend the cured local sardines layered with creamy avocado mousse, raspberried onion, toasted almonds and herb oil, and the chef’s usuzukuri plate of raw fish --- halibut on the night we visited --- with Japanese cucumber, coriander vinaigrette and powdered black sesame. Main dishes such as sautéed sea bass and Szechuan lamb with polenta gratin and ratatouille are satisfying, but we’d suggest saving room for the Point Reyes Blue cheesecake. The wine list is spotted with esoteric local sips worth seeking out --- a Grüner Veltliner from Monterey’s Darcie Kent Vineyards, for example, pairs well with the delicate fish dishes.
