Stissing House Restaurant & Tavern Restaurant Review:

Stissing House, a tavern and restaurant established in 1782, features a rare domed-ceiling ballroom, original Dutch colonial framing and beautiful hand-hewn timbers. Though the place deteriorated to a rowdy bar and eventually closed, Stissing House has been lovingly and expensively refurbished as a restaurant and as a center for community activities in Pine Plains. The building has a variety of cozy dining rooms. Specialty pizzas, cooked in the wood-fired grill and brick oven, include the thick crust, roasted garlic, ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan and pesto white pizza. We also suggest the blue crab cake with celery root and apple slaw; the goat cheese tart with caramelized onions; and the marinated grilled quail with wild mushroom bread pudding. Entrées include a double-cut pork chop with a country pepper stew; grilled duck breast and a leg confit with a port demi-glace, creamy polenta and sautéed greens; and organic poussin with roasted garlic and lemon. Stissing offers a good wine list featuring the outstanding New York state Millbrook wines.
