Sushi House Unico (SHU) Restaurant Review:

This sleek establishment allows Bel-Air residents to enjoy topnotch sushi without going down or over the hill. Co-owned by Italian restaurateur Giacomino Drago (Beverly Hills’ Il Pastaio, Pasadena’s Celestino, among others), this is a Japanese restaurant with subtle Italian and Latin touches. The small, modern space is a stylish study of glass, tile, concrete and bamboo, accented with dramatic orange box lanterns. Most of the action takes place at the sushi bar, which is carved from a massive walnut slab. Dishes include halibut carpaccio topped with arugula and sun-dried tomatoes; albacore doused in spicy garlic oil and crowned with shaved black truffles; and deep-fried, almond-crusted scallops. A pairing of fried oysters and oyster ceviche impresses, and Kobe beef sashimi is a worthy prelude to an array of sushi so fresh that soy sauce is superfluous. We recommend finishing up in the spirit of Italy, with an artistically presented panna cotta or green tea tiramisu. Drinks include Japanese beers, premium sakés and select California wines.
