Sushi Masu Restaurant Review:
Looking very much like another nondescript neighborhood sushi bar --- and easily missed, given its diminutive dimensions --- Masu happens to be a cut above the typical Westside sushi joint. Sure, the seasoned chef will happily make you a California roll, but he'll probably grumble under his breath about it. A traditionalist, he'd rather compose simple yet aesthetically distinctive plates of sushi or sashimi, utilizing mostly top-quality ingredients. Masu is a nice alternative to the pricier establishments on the Westside and the pleasant space balances style (such as linen-topped tables illuminated by contemporary hanging lamps) and function (evident in those ubiquitous posters of fish species). Oysters with salsa, pungent monkfish liver, and fresh sea urchin are some of the specialties, while more generic items like spicy tuna on crispy rice are also served. Cooked dishes include bacon-wrapped oysters and udon with tempura. A large selection of saké is available. Dessert options are few, with a fresh fruit plate or ice cream.
