Before Ruth's Chris or Morton's or any of a dozen high-end restaurants came to Jacksonville, there was The Tree Steakhouse. And while the clubby eatery---done in dark wood tones and soothing forest green---isn't quite up to the level of the best steak chains, it does offer Prime beef, well prepared. The most popular steak at the eatery is the rib-eye which is brought to your table and cut to your specifications. To choose other options, diners select their cut of beef from a rolling cart of raw meat, and all entrées come with a baked potato, pilaf or fries and a trip to the house salad bar. The Tree's steadfast refusal to go à la carte with all side dishes has endeared it to locals who feel they're entitled to a meal---not just a piece of meat or fish---for top-dollar prices. Service can be uneven, particularly on busy nights. But somehow, the lack of a uniform service protocol, along with no-nonsense career waiters, adds to the charm of the place.
