Merchant's Restaurant Restaurant Review: Merchant’s is housed in a building dating to 1892; the restaurant has been around for 25 years. Two styles of dining are available: the café-style room on the lower level features an extensive menu of salads, starters, sandwiches and entrées in a casual atmosphere. Upstairs, the tone is substantially more elegant. Executive chef Jason Brumm’s menu includes such Southern classics as shrimp and grits as well as more worldly selections like pork osso buco with sweet potatoes, onion jus and smoked pecan brittle. There’s also a good selection of fine steaks with à la carte sides including mascarpone creamed spinach and stout-braised Brussels sprouts. Start with the “bacon and eggs” (pork belly with poached truffled egg over brioche) or the pumpkin soup. Desserts might include bread pudding made with Goo Goo Clusters, a locally beloved chocolate peanut confection. Some two dozen wines are offered by the glass, and classic cocktails are a great match for the timeless décor.
