THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Meztiso Latin Bistro & Wine Bar Restaurant Review:

This is a Mexican restaurant that is in dire need of a menu that speaks more fluently. Chef and owner Jona Silva is trying to do a Mexican tapas thing, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to us. And dishes like pisto manchego and Andalusian-style beef stew have no place here. Chicagoans respond to first-rate Mexican food (Frontera Grill and Salpicon are good examples). There are tons of casual Mexican restaurants to choose from, but haute Mexican is in short supply, so why not position Meztiso there? We did come across a few good dishes---asparagus with Serrano ham, shrimp with garlic and chiles, and pollo con mole---but not enough considering the extensive menu. The atmosphere is pleasant enough, even though this is the fourth generation of a restaurant in this space with minor cosmetic changes made along the way. The service staff means well but is often out of sync with the kitchen. And for a place with wine bar in the name, the wine selection is woeful.
