Mia Francesca Restaurant Review: Del Mar is home to another outpost of Scott Harris' Chicago-born trattoria. The menu changes frequently, but you can count on fresh bruschetta, mussels in spicy tomato sauce, or carpaccio with capers to appear as antipasti. Insalata alla Francesca mixes endive, radicchio and romaine with blue cheese and seasonal vegetables. Heaping bowls of pasta are de rigueur, and we especially like the penne with sausage and wild mushrooms. Spinach ravioli with four cheeses is also satisfying, but it's the roast chicken that calls us back. Chef Woody Benitez brines, sears and bakes it so it's tender, moist and memorable, infused with garlic, onion and a little chili for heat. For dessert, we enjoy classics like profiteroles and tiramisu --- no surprises, but they’re well prepared. The young, energetic waitstaff is friendly and fits with the family-centric crowd, who are passing through the mall for a bite. Black-and-white artwork is by photographer Paul Elledge, whose country shots and portraits of the local people carry you away to Tuscany for a welcomed moment or two.
