THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mission Bar & Grill Restaurant Review:

Devotees of the long-closed Val 21 may rejoice at the opening of Mission Bar & Grill, which is owned by the proprietors of Val 21. The shiny metallic entrance evokes Art Deco and looks a bit awkward along the otherwise dustier patina of the surrounding buildings The interior is a classy rendition of the American diner. Black-and white-tiled floors set off the dark wood walls along the narrow space. A few Formica-topped tables look out onto Mission Street and a long counter is perched opposite the bar and under the sunburst-shaped mirror. Strangely, diner food does not have a stronghold on the short, ethnically diverse menu. Instead try the Mediterranean platter loaded with hummus, tabbouleh, olives, and warm pita bread. Cheese and mushroom quesadillas served with a bright mound of salsa pairs nicely with a plate of succulent fish tacos. Plump and spicy crab cakes match up with a crisp Caesar salad. The delicious grilled skirt steak arrives with rice, beans, salsa, and warm tortillas to make your own tacos. With all the hearty dishes, most of which are under $10, it may be hard to save room for a giant slice of chocolate cake.
