| Chef William Belickis, who gained a following at his first Mistral restaurant in Belltown, has created a hip twenty-first-century culinary experience in Seattle's South Lake Union neighborhood. Not everyone will warm to the chic industrial space or the small portions and high prices. And although a casual, less expensive à la carte menu is available in the lounge-like main dining and bar area, the best way to take in the complete MistralKitchen “experience” is with a prix-fixe dinner in the Jewel Box dining room or at the exclusive chef’s table. Ranging from $60-$190 per person, the former is an investment. Plan to spend several hours and be surprised by Belickis’ clever creations. At the chef’s table ($250), you will be presented with a list of the evening’s ingredients, then you may discuss your food fantasies. Dishes have included brown butter and parsnip soup, a Maine sea scallop and carrot foam, warm endive salad with soft poached egg, roasted skate with matsutake mushrooms, seared foie gras (cleverly served mid-meal giving the palate time to “warm up” for the richness), breast of moulard duck, and rack of Oregon lamb. Service is casual but professional. MistralKitchen’s wine list has a global focus, differentiating it from most of Seattle’s high-end restaurants, which tend to focus on local wines. |
