| Perched in a penthouse space atop Mt. Washington, Monterey Bay Fish Grotto has a wraparound wall of windows granting a striking panorama of Pittsburgh’s Point, rivers and skyline. While retaining the stylized palm tree columns, the updated décor is sleek ultramarine with crisp white linens. Owners Glen and Lisa Hawley cloned their original, now closed, Jonnet Building Monroeville fresh fish concept. But amenities in this larger venture add a banquet room, glass-enclosed lounge and a private wine room, serving fixed-price, five- to six-course dinners for as many as 27 guests. The house specializes in fish flown in from east and west coasts and the Hawaiian Islands. The menu offers nearly 20 daily selections, charbroiled or sautéed, with a wide variety of seasonings and sauces. Highly recommended are the seared ahi and the definitive crab cake. Desserts---cheesecakes, chocolate truffle cake and white chocolate macadamia nut mousse---are major crowd-pleasers. An extensive wine list focuses on American labels---except Champagne. The wine-by-the-glass program includes 40 premium vintages. |
