| Ouzo, orzo and moussaka may define Greek cooking for some DC folks, but the Dupont Circle Mourayo is going to change all that. Instead of trotting out the tried and true assemblage of dishes, the kitchen here serves classic Greek cooking, the likes of which never showed up in these parts. Imagine a pork tenderloin sweetened with figs and a brush of honey sauce? Or a lamb stew of buttery meat braised in a rich sauce and served with orzo? We started off with sautéed prawns with a tomato-feta sauce and a beggar's purse of phyllo dough filled with red peppers and cheese. And where else in this area can you end up with tiny wheat cakes with rose petals? It's important to note that all this does not come with a whopping price tag. Affordable, imaginative and luscious food makes Mourayo a stunning success. As for décor, management has portrayed a Greek seaside setting with its striking blue walls and waiters in sailor outfits. It sounds cutesy, but it actually works. Besides, you won't care what's on the walls when you are too busy sighing over the meal. |
