 The Italian-beef sandwich is one of the best in the city; there's a spicy, tantalizing sweetness to the meat that is incomparable. And it’s not just regular folk who noticed: Jay Leno and Jerry Springer are among its devotees. The ribbons of meat are loaded with a heavy hand into a soft-inside, crispy-outside roll, and the peppers (sweet, hot or both) are piled on top and served wet or dry. It's a fine piece of work, this beauty-and-the-beef sandwich. The grilled Italian sausage has a marvelous flavor as well, thanks to a good hit of fennel.
