| Ms. Hyster’s is an “only in New Orleans” food experience. How they offer such big portions for such low prices is anybody’s guess. Primarily a take-out barbecue joint, Ms. Hyster's draws Mississippi transplants craving hickory-smoked pork spareribs (rosy all the way through), delicately peppered mustard greens, sweet cornbread and old-fashioned pound cake. You never know what the cooks won't get around to making, so keep an open mind. Fortunately, everything---from black-eyed peas to baked macaroni to barbecued chicken---is down-home good, and so inexpensive you'll be looking around for a donation box. Proprietor Virginia Johnson (the late Ms. Hyster's granddaughter) loves gospel music so much she sells it out of cases lining one of the restaurant's walls. |
