| This little beachtown oasis is a favorite of locals, families and salty surfers who’ve just spent the morning hanging ten. Owner Gabe Wheeler wanted to create a place to get quick healthy food, and it’s been bustling ever since. The menu, a fun read, sports dishes like fuzzy monkey pancakes (with roasted grains and fresh bananas), spuds in lingerie (crisp potatoes with onions, jalapeño and tomatoes, smothered in black beans, avocado and sour cream) and deities wrap (sesame-ginger tofu in a spinach tortilla with brown rice, veggies and black beans). We like the coconut french toast and roast beef hash with horseradish cream, herbed potatoes and scrambled eggs as lazy morning favorites. Freshly baked herb breads, tortillas, muffins, croissants, cakes and innovative sauces add to the tasty mix. Vegetarian or vegan versions of some dishes are available too. The lively space, an enclosed patio with a bamboo roof, is filled with close tables and long communal ones where new friendships are forged over lattes and mimosas. Sister cafés can be found in Carlsbad and Point Loma. |
