| Health food purists may poo-poo The Natural Café, which isn’t strictly organic and does serve plenty of animal products, but when you’re looking for a quick and hearty meal that doesn’t necessarily come wrapped in a tortilla, this is the place to go. The soups are prepared daily with fresh ingredients, and the daily fish special includes organic brown rice and steamed vegetables. Sandwiches and salads are popular, as are vegetarian entrées such as tempeh tacos and veggie-stuffed spuds. The turkey burger is among the best in town---and costs less than a drink at many restaurants. Friendly, down-to-earth servers match the restaurant’s character. Expect to wait in line during the lunch rush, especially at the downtown location, which sees a fair amount of tourists, in addition to the local crowd of health minded nine-to-fivers, college students and shoppers. There’s a nice selection of fresh-baked pastries, but you’re better off with one of the smoothies---or a blueberry shake made with vanilla ice cream. (Soy shakes are available, too.) Santa Barbara County locations also include Goleta and Santa Maria. |
