| Amidst the many sushi restaurants in Manhattan, it is refreshing to find one so brazen in its attempts to create exciting combinations of flavors without using extraneous sauces and breading. It’s difficult to decide between the specials of the day and the menu of makis and cooked dishes. The eel roll is not simply barbecued anago with a gooey eel sauce; instead, Neo’s version employs a moist chopped eel with avocado, cucumber and tempura. Black cod with yuzu sauce is a citrusy change from the usual miso honey glaze. More substantial dishes like stone beef ishiyaki, cooked over a hot stone at the table, and lamb chops with wasabi teriyaki sauce fill out the menu. A nice selection of desserts, from green tea tiramisu to thinly sliced pineapple served with tiny dollops of sesame sauce, adds a sweet finishing touch. |
