The New City Diner is a cafeteria that goes the extra mile, turning out flavorful, approachable dishes with a consistency rarely found in such places. The chicken-and-sausage gumbo is chock-full of both, in an expertly seasoned broth. The fish, whether fried or broiled, is reliably fresh and moist, and the always-crisp salads are done with flair. The lines are always long at peak breakfast and lunch hours, but an excellent sense of organization prevails, making the wait no longer than five minutes or so. The spotless dining areas, brightened with checkered tablecloths, and quick table busing make the New City Diner a godsend for a hungry soul with limited time and a taste for bargains.
