City Councilwoman Mary Rose Wilcox and her husband Earl took over the historic but decrepit El Portal, spiffed it up, changed the menu and re-opened as The New El Portal---a clean, well-lit place that plays to downtown business people, local politicos and members of the Hispanic community. At lunchtime, it’s hard to get a table because everybody’s there for a crack at the hearty soups (which change daily) and Sonoran dishes so downhome and authentic they suggest a grandma in the kitchen. Not to be missed selections include the chile relleno, the red chile plate and the carne asada taco, complete with guacamole and radish garnish. Early birds show up for excellent Mexican breakfasts (served all day) which include huevos rancheros, machaca con huevos and hard-to-find chilaquiles. Keep this sweet spot in mind when you’re headed downtown.
