Niu Noodle House Restaurant Review

: The first thing you notice about this Chinese restaurant in the West Village is the perplexing décor: it’s meant to evoke eating in a quant alleyway in an Asian city; the open kitchen has a fake awning like it’s the actual restaurant (a restaurant inside a restaurant, get it?). But there are so many cultural incongruities --- a steer's skull tacked to the wall, a replica of the Washington Square arch over the door to the kitchen --- one wonders if the food is similarly all over the place. And it is, somewhat. Pork and chive pan-fried dumplings are over-stuffed with ingredients, somehow muting the taste completely; this is also the case with the spring roll. The soup dumplings, however, are surprisingly palatable, as are the various soup noodles. At least the drinks are fairly potent, so if you order incorrectly you can always wash it down with something strong.
