THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Noche Restaurant Review:
The original Noche opens with a hot bar scene that draws savvy sippers to sample an array of margaritas, made with one of the 30 or so high-end tequilas. A rear balcony offers an alternative to the tight banquettes and a breath of fresh air. The menu relies on the simple snack fare that one finds chiefly in Mexico --- tacos, for instance --- with some touches that recall other parts of the Latin culinary world. The barbacoa-stuffed taco with a good slaw on top gives a Carolina-style lift to the traditional dish. Tender grilled shrimp fill another one, along with black beans and corn. Guacamole includes queso, a bit nontraditional but tasty with its light hit of heat. Nachos easily serve two or more. Desserts offer a good portion; we suggest the dulce de leche pie with a side of whipped sweet cream. The wine list focuses on good values, but we would like to see better choices that go with this food. A rosado, please? Beer might make a better option, as do the margaritas, although we prefer the classics to those with odd combinations. There are other locations, but for some reason we enjoy the cooking at this one best.
