The Oak Tree, which underwent a renovation to become brighter---and, dare we say, hipper---was a top coffee shop hangout when it was located at Oak and Rush Streets. When it moved to the sixth floor of this posh building on North Michigan Avenue, it lost some of its cachet but not its regular customers. Food-wise, we find it’s sturdy as ever. Breakfast, served all day long, offers more than the usual fare, such as an egg white scramble with goat cheese and spinach, turkey hash, malted-wheat waffles, fresh baked muffins, smoked salmon and smoked fish. The best part is that in the a.m. the spot is quiet, making it the perfect place to have a business meeting or to just read the paper. At lunch and dinner, the action picks up, and so does the kitchen, spinning out flavorful tuna Niçoise and killer grilled cheese.
