THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Oakfire Pizzeria & Pub Restaurant Review:
Owner Greg Morris does here for pizzas what he did for Mexican cuisine across the street at Spanish Kitchen. That means more-than-decent food in a fun and festive setting. Morris carefully researched his subject, sampling dozens of pies around the country, even sending his cooks to Italy before settling on his dough. The menu features nearly 30 thin crust pizzas, baked at 800 degrees over walnut and mesquite, and another half-dozen Chicago-style, deep dish pies cooked and served in a skillet. We like the veggie deep dish pie, but a single slice may well fill you up. Among the thin crust, you can't go wrong with the basic margherita. The wine list offers 20 or so selections, each with tasting notes and a suggested pizza pairing. And then there’s Opus One, a favorite of the owner’s, offered by the glass. There’s a well-stocked bar, too, featuring custom-labeled Jack Daniels, all from a single barrel purchased by Morris. Come in early for the best deal: happy hour runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. nightly, and pretty much everything but the top wines can be had for half off.
