Mexican restaurants in the West Village are not uncommon, but Ofrenda offers elevated dishes from chef Luis Arce Mota’s home in Mazatlan with twists from his training at Le Cordon Bleu. We recommend the crab meat served in a shell with chile poblano sauce and celery root purée. Garlicky shrimp had a nice charge of pepper, offset by the side of esquites, grilled corn slathered with queso blanco and chile de árbol, or chayotes relleno. A main course of salmon was surprisingly plain in contrast to the other more picante choices; the hanger steak grilled with chile serrano is a better option, showing off some heat and creative seasoning. Cocktails include mezcal and tequila drinks, and sodas and Mexican beers are available. The setting is unpretentious and the service can be a bit casual. In nice weather, the outdoor seating area takes full advantage of the lively Village location.
