Old South Bar-B-Q Restaurant Review:

Founded in 1968 in a former single-family home, Old South Bar-B-Q was the handiwork of the late Helen and Jim Llewallyn, whose five children operate the establishment today. The rustic interior with faux wood paneling that Jim crafted almost 50 years ago remains adorned with a variety of treasured items and photos. Long-serving staffers offer brisk but ever-friendly service. Although you can get a burger and a hot dog, that's not why you come here: you want a barbecue plate. We suggest the long spare ribs with Brunswick stew and slaw to round out the meal. Chopped, sliced or pulled pork are options, as is chopped or sliced beef. Chicken, too. Of the four sauces, go for the original with maybe just a bit of the hot mixed in. In North Carolina fashion, hush puppies are on the menu. Various pies are available for dessert. No alcohol is served.
