RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Prime Cut Café has opened in Orange's Stadium Promenade entertainment center. The 233-seat restaurant boasts a casual environment, value pricing, American comfort fare and an extensive wine list. Consulting chef Kelly Mullarney and executive chef Ronnie Arnold (formerly of hush and Motif) spent over a year developing the lunch and dinner menus, and much of the food is made from scratch such as house-smoked salmon, house-brined pork and Angus beef burger meat ground daily on site. Appetizers are meant to be shared and are designed to pair with wine. Choices include mini Gruyere and prosciutto sandwiches and five farm-style cheeses accompanied by honeycomb, candied nuts and artisan breads. The centerpiece of the dinner menu is the slow-roasted Prime rib, which comes in three cuts and with sides of Yorkshire pudding and creamed spinach. Prime Cut Café also features four signature steaks. More than 72 international wine labels are offered by the taste, flight, glass or bottle. Lunch & Dinner daily. Prime Cut CafĂ©, Stadium Promenade, 1547 W. Katella Ave., Orange, CA 92867, 714-532-4300.

Chef David Myers of Sona and Comme Ca has opened his first restaurant in Orange County: Pizzeria Ortica. Myers has partnered with chef Stephan Samson, who worked previously for Piero Selvaggio at Santa Monica's Valentino and Valentino Vegas, on this casual Italian pizzeria restaurant with wood-burning ovens and outdoor seating. Samson's roots are in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region and many of the recipes come from his mama's kitchen. Besides Napoli-style pizzas, the menu features Northern Italian pastas, lots of antipasti and piadine sandwiches at lunch. In Spring 2009, Myers will open Ortica, a sister restaurant to Pizzeria Ortica in Los Angeles that will offer an intimate 40-seat space to sample Italian cheeses, cured meats and wine. Read about Sophie Gayot's visit to Pizzeria Ortica on Gayot's blog. Pizzeria Ortica, 650 Anton Blvd., Ste. J, Costa Mesa, CA 92626, 714-445-4900.
