Enjoy The Island Every Weekend Through Summer
The Island Hotel Newport Beach has two ways to enjoy the weekend this summer. On Friday evenings from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. enjoy half-priced drinks, wines by the glass and signature punch at the resort's poolside Palapa Bar. While listening to live entertainment from a local band, nosh on appetizers like peel-and-eat shrimp with chipotle bloody Mary sauce, jumbo Alaskan crab claws and a Hawaiian-style ahi poke with crackers and chips. On Sundays, bring the kids to a pool party and barbecue. Held from 5 p.m.-9 p.m., this family-friendly buffet dinner features seasonal summer favorites like chilled shrimp and cucumber salad, slow-braised and grilled beef short ribs, yogurt-spiced chicken kebabs and tree-ripened stone fruit short cake. Swimming at the resort's lush pool and jacuzzi is encouraged. The cost is $35 per person for adults, and $12 for kids 12 and under (complimentary for children 5 and under). Haven Gastropub Launches Innovative Summer Menu
Inventive chef and partner Greg Daniels of Haven Gastropub has introduced his new summer menu. Some of his new menu items include lobster-chevre mousse-filled squash blossoms and a hearty chicken-and-waffles entrée with fried chicken, cornmeal waffles, housemade hot sauce and bärenjäger maple syrup. Managing partner and beverage director Wil Dee is on hand most days to pair each item with one of 14 hand-crafted beers on tap or 60 bottled craft beers. Haven Gastropub, Old Towne Orange, 190 S. Sapphire Laguna Introduces Street Foods of America Plates
Chef Azmin Ghahreman of Sapphire Laguna has introduced a new "street foods of America" tasting menu. Ranging in price from just $6.50-$8.50, these small plates include San Francisco "rickshaw" pork and shrimp dumplings with chili-soy dipping sauce, a New Orleans-style "jumbo shrimp boil," Pacific Northwest-influenced apple barbecue lamb riblets and a Chicagoan Greek octopus salad with oregano-basil dressing. Spice plates can also be paired with the restaurant's signature cocktails, artisan beers and 37 wines by the glass starting at $8. Sapphire Laguna, Old Pottery Place, 1200 S. TAPS Brews Now Offered at SoCal Restaurants
TAPS Fish House & Brewery in Brea has received so many awards for its brews and ales that some of the most prestigious gastropubs and craft-beer restaurants in OC, L.A. and San Diego are now offering them, including Father's Office, the Surly Goat, Verdugo Bar, Haven Gastropub, Beachwood BBQ and the Catch. TAPS brewmaster Victor Novak and his "brew crew" handcrafts each keg. Some of Novak's artisans beers for sale in these SoCal restaurants are his IPA, California Gold, Vienna Country Lager, Cream Ale, Biere de Garde, Belgian White, Schwarbier and Irish Red. Summer Sunday BBQs at The Balboa Bay Club & Resort
On Sunday evenings through August 29, The Balboa Bay Club & Resort is bringing back its Summer Sunday BBQ. Starting at 5 p.m., the barbecue is held on the scenic outdoor terrace of the resort's casual eatery, Duke's Place. Guests can sway to the island sounds of Coconut Frank, a live steel drum band, and nosh on all-you-can-eat mesquite-grilled baby back ribs, tri tip beef, free-range chicken and a variety of salads and desserts. The cost is $29.50 for adults and $19.50 for children (exclusive of tax and gratuity). Reservations are recommended. (Note: The barbecue will not take place July 4.)
