The Original Hot Dog Shop Restaurant Review: The Original Hot Dog Shop opened in 1960 --- just before Bill Mazerowski clinched the World Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates at nearby Forbes Field. Like “Maz,” “The O” is a Pittsburgh icon, a corner eatery that has nourished decades of university students, fast-food scholars and visiting celebrities. “The O” offers pizzas, salads, chicken strips and sandwiches, but the buzz is about the locally made, secret recipe dogs. The fries that are twice cooked in peanut oil to produce good crispiness are among the best in town. Savvy patrons eat them with “gravy.” Note: The bar serves only beer, but offers more than 400 microbrews and craft labels. The restaurant is non-smoking. |
