Orphan Breakfast House Restaurant Review: Orphan Breakfast House is a good place to while away a lazy morning with a newspaper and a hot cup of coffee---as long as that newspaper is an alternative weekly and the coffee is single-origin and roasted in-house. So-named as a nod to anti-chain, independent small business, Orphan prides itself on its individuality. Diners seeking artery-clogging standards will be out of luck here. Rather, the menu focuses on healthier alternatives with a global influence. Dishes range from the savory, such as the roast beef hash with rosemary potatoes and horseradish, to the sweet, such as the banana-blackberry pancakes. Other choices include house-made granola, soy chorizo scramble and sweet corn breakfast tamales. Those needing an extra pick-me-up can order a multi-vitamin or cigarette for 75 cents.
