The sleek, dimly lit dining room of Ozumo, which also has outposts in San Francisco and Oakland, is an expansive space offering a peaceful environment for a special occasion or business meeting. But don’t assume this is just another sushi restaurant; on the contrary, Ozumo is an all-encompassing Japanese culinary experience, with highlights of robata, kushiyaki and twists on regional American fare. The signature garlic soy edamame wallops your palate with a dose of umami; and a plethora of sea-faring creatures are represented on the sushi menu, including sea bream, halibut and spotted prawns. Notable items range from hanabi, a blend of hamachi, avocado and yuzu jalapeño ponzu sauce, to hotate, which includes pan-seared scallops accompanied by genmari rice risotto slow cooked with shimeji mushrooms and uni sauce. Ozumo also crafts its own saké, which can be enjoyed especially on Mondays, when the restaurant offers guests at the sushi bar a one-hour, all-you-can-eat menu.
