| Local restaurant tycoon Joe Cosniac has long served his brand of Italian with an attitude, and at four decades-plus, his Paesanos remains hip, happening (especially during late-afternoon see-and-be-seen sessions) and noisy. The shrimp Paesano that was the signature dish at the original restaurant is still on the menu---to remove it would incite a riot. But though we find that the Loop 1604 location is more prone to adventure, we nevertheless tend toward such dishes here as the linguini neri alla marinara, gamberi fra diavolo, and the pork, veal and lamb shank renditions of osso buco. Poached salmon with wild mushrooms is a calorie-conscious option. And traditional palates can retreat to pollo cacciatore or a dependable penne all’arrabiata. A pizza with tomato, goat cheese and basil works, too. And if the torta di mele calda is available, snag it; it’s Mom’s apple pie with an Italian accent. |
