Palio d'Asti, San Francisco, CA

Palio d'Asti Restaurant Review

: Colorful flags reminiscent of Siena's Palio --- the famous horse race dating back to medieval times --- fly in this sleek restaurant. Start with a selection of house-made antipasti or one of the thin, crispy-crusted pizzas fresh out of the brick oven. Main courses include salmon with chickpeas or salt cod and a fennel-and-garlic ragoût. The chicken cooked under a brick, perfumed with lemon and rosemary, is served with sautéed escarole and roasted potatoes. We also enjoy the eggplant Parmigiana --- it is baked rather than fried and, of course, topped with mozzarella. Pastas are traditional, straightforward and fresh. For dessert, try the seasonally adjusted crostata, a fresh fruit tart that changes daily. The wine list is succinct and almost exclusively Italian. For a quick lunch, opt for the grab-and-go Sicilian pizza slices, salads and dessert from a converted pastry kitchen behind the restaurant.
