THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Pamir Restaurant Review:
Afghan rugs hang from the walls, Eastern music plays softly in the background and exotic spices perfume the air of this enchanting candlelit oasis. Afghan cooking is earthier than its Indian counterparts, and the best bet here is to order a combination dinner. It may include such dishes as a scallion turnover with yogurt (bulanee gandana), a ground beef-and-potato turnover (bulanee kachalou) and scallion dumplings (aushak). Our favorite entrée is the orange palaw, seasoned lamb under a mound of saffron rice, topped with almonds, pistachios, orange strips, rosewater and cardamom. The marinated kebabs are also worth trying as are the spinach stew with spicy sauce and sautéed eggplant with yogurt. Stick with Afghan tea for a finisher; the three desserts are heavy, very sweet and dominated by pistachios. Also located at 1437 Second Ave., 212-734-3791.
