Tucked onto a street off of the frenetic Magnificent Mile, this sedate, hidden gem is a breath of fresh air. The setting is muted---earth-toned walls, polished service, gleaming tableware---but the food, by contrast, is bold. Simple in presentation, precise in execution, dishes like fresh hearts of palm---lounging on a bed of asparagus, avocado and shaved fennel with delicate truffle vinaigrette---typify the Northern Italian-tinged offerings. Standouts from the menu, which frequently changes, also have included shimeji-yellow foot wild mushroom salad with garlic and herbs as well as fork-tender short ribs and luxe lobster risotto. Main courses do not disappoint, though the Gorgonzola-stuffed quail is of particular note. Opera cake is a dramatically plated (and pleasing) finale. A 1,200-bottle-strong wine list---regularly the inspiration for wine dinners---lends a special occasion feel.
