 Paolo's is pretty much San Jose's celeb hangout, counting as onetime patrons former president Ronald Reagan and the late Joe DiMaggio. At lunch, sandwiches, pastas, soups and salads make up the bulk of the menu. Most guests opt for a pasta first course, like the toothsome house-made egg pasta stuffed with braised lamb shank and ricotta, or the cappellini in a luscious cream, cheese and basil sauce. Paolo’s Express is a daily hot special with “ethnic flair,” ranging from chicken flautas to salmon teriyaki. At night, the braised veal shank with saffron-infused farro and the poached striped bass make this a destination restaurant. Finish with the warm chestnut crêpes. The wine list is like a super Tuscan vintage: deep and rich. Service is well rehearsed, yet friendly.
