When the sun shines, this is where chic Santa Barbara wants to lunch---under the umbrella tables and behind the green hedge. For years, this was an old-time Mexican restaurant. Then some young guys spruced it up, but kept the nostalgic ambience and the original architecture. The food, though, is strictly American: chili, notable burgers, trademark black bean soup, seafood, and oak-grilled chops and steak. Fresh fish is well prepared---salmon on the grill, local halibut pan-broiled with lemon, butter and white wine---and served in a simple presentation. The indoor lower level was transformed into one of the town's most happening bars for the young crowd.
