| Unfortunately for some and fortunately for others, this eccentric bistro is located in Stanton. But don’t let the drive steer you away from making this place a regular in your fine dining repertoire. Chef-partner David Slay created the interior of this Googie-inspired building like a post-modern museum of cosmo-intelligence and down-home comfort. Slay’s food is a wonder of flavors and invention because each dish seems to have a very American component, whether corn fritters, horseradish, cranberry jam, New England maple ham or Vermont cheddar. Start with an old-fashioned cocktail or glass of wine from the well-chosen list featuring mostly California vintners. Don’t miss trying the standout lobster fritter or tenderloin bites appetizers. Slay has pared down his entrée menu for the better as the gourmet burgers are gone, leaving only well prepared wild game, seafood, steaks and chops. We recommend the sweet and savory apple-stuffed pork chop or the tender bone-in rib-eye steak. Desserts are just as pleasing to the eye and palate as the entrées. Chef Slay also hosts winemaker dinners and Friday night shrimp feasts. |
