Though over the years the owners of this incomparable space have brought in big-name chefs to create contemporary menus, the food (which includes such basics as filet mignon, New York strip steak, roasted swordfish and organic chicken marinated with mustard and parsley) could never compete with the setting. Overlooking the still waters of Central Park Lake, with boaters and gondoliers floating peacefully by and the sumptuous Bethesda Fountain in the distance, the view comes as close to a vista in Paris or London as you’re likely to find in Manhattan. The service here can be inattentive, but the idyllic surroundings---a serene oasis of water, trees and winding paths---transports you far from cares about such things. Brunch is the most popular meal at the Boathouse, so be sure to reserve ahead.
