Brought to you by the owners of hipster eatery Freemans, this Bowery restaurant was first called “Freemans 2.0” in the press. But Peels is anything but a Freemans clone. The bi-level space is light and airy with a café on the ground floor and a slightly less casual (though just as noisy) dining room upstairs. The menu has a Southern accent and some of it is memorable, particularly the shrimp and creamy grits. Fried chicken, that recession-era dish du jour, is crunchy and comes with a cob of corn and a generous slice of watermelon, both of which nicely buttress the weight of the chicken. Other feel-good fare includes andouille corn dogs, cornmeal-encrusted catfish (with jalapeño-laced grits), and crispy pulled pork. There are a handful of great cocktails to choose from, including the Bowery-referencing Joey Ramone (Applejack brandy, lime and Concord grape).
