THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Penfold's Cattle Company Restaurant Review: Fitting in nicely with the Western theme of Old Town Temecula is Penfold’s Cattle Company, which feels like the cross between an Old West saloon and a cosmopolitan chophouse. Linen-topped tables are illuminated by Tiffany-style lamps hanging from a vaulted wooden ceiling, and a decorative glass wall is embellished with images of covered wagons. Among starters are scallops bathed in a Thai-spiced honey-molasses sauce, a satisfying sweet-and-tangy dish, as well as the obligatory tuna tartare and shrimp cocktail. As the name implies, beef is the main attraction here and steaks from premium grass-fed beef are fired at high temperatures to seal in the flavor and juices. Other options include deftly prepared salmon with Peruvian potato cakes and a creamy mustard sauce, and a pork chop with an apple brandy demi-glace. In addition to the Temecula Valley, other regions of California are represented on a short, moderately priced wine list whose selection by the glass is disappointing considering there are tasting rooms up and down the street. Desserts include crème brûlée, tarte Tatin and something aptly dubbed Chocolate Overload, a huge slab of chocolate bread pudding cake with chocolate ice cream.
