Though they certainly lived a lavish lifestyle, the sultans of the Ottoman Empire didn’t always have it easy. Each day they had to make a heck of a choice from a dizzying harem, after all. One can’t help but feel a similar dilemma while searching the menu at this Turkish-Mediterranean Midtowner. What to pick from the multitude? Provocative aromas emanating from the open kitchen don’t make the task any easier. One way to ease the quandary is to start with the meze sampler, nine nightly tastes that may include smoked salmon cured in raki, the anise-flavored Turkish tipple; fresh feta cheese; grape leaves stuffed with cinnamon-tinged rice; or bulgur-bulked beef tartare. Pidette, fired-to-order breads, are another must, and the $3 price tag allows for exploring a few, while the “Pera Tradition” offers a feast of terrific skewered meats like cubed chicken or ground lamb. But the juicy whole branzino or smoky grilled sardines make a great case for the seafood. Plan a repeat visit for whatever you’re unable to explore. The buzzy, energetic brasserie setting will certainly welcome your return.
